Doggie Dilemma

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has been studying a recent salmonella outbreak in humans possibly traced to Diamond Pet Foods' dog food. They've identified some affected food manufactured in South Carolina but salmonella has been reported in 14 people across nine states. The location and number of affected people: Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Virginia (1). Not sure if Hawaii could even be included in the survey. (Not so long ago I went in to an emergency room with severe abdominal pain beyond any I'd experienced before and after 3 hours of tests and medication; one gigantic bill later, I was fine. The next day when I called the Dept of Health to ask about any outbreak of salmonella because there were three unrelated people in this same emergency room with the same severe pain that night, the Dept of Health said they could not answer because hospitals may be treating for but not identifying all cases of salmonella so (he) could not answer whether there was any outbreak.)
The CDC believes that those who have fallen ill got sick from contact with dogs who had eaten tainted doggie food identified to Diamond brands. Dogs are relatively resistant to salmonella and usually do not show signs of illness from eating contaminated kibble but humans who handle the food or the dog, can acquire the bacteria and get sick. As a precaution the manufacturers increased the number of brands on the recall. So caution in what you are feeding your dog, in washing his/her dish with the same kitchen sponge you use to scrub your own dishes, and as for those big kisses... can't help it!
Aloha Shiro

Franz "Shiro" Matsuo, founder of Shiro's Saimin restaurants, has died at the age of 93. We interviewed him with his daughter for our series on local businesses, Local Ventures, and he proved to be a true original. His menu was longer than any you'll see anywhere at least ina restaurant that specializes in saimin. Much of his poetry and words of wisdom are posted on the walls of the restaurant in Pearl City and in his younger days he was known to break into song playing his ukulele and performing as if he'd been on stage all his life. Aloha to one of Honolulu's historical Mom & Pop shops, and to an icon, Shiro Matsuo. We're sad to have to say goodbye.

The Dictator: Opening Scene
Official Opening Scene from The Dictator starring Sacha Baron Cohen. I love his sense of humor and his boldness fringing on insanity. He says and does in public what most of us would never dream of doing. My apologies to those who feel he's too irreverent, silly, nuts, crackers, and not funny. In theaters May 16th.
