Tom's Shoes at Whole Foods

Life is Good readers can leave a positive footprint on a child’s life when they purchase a pair of TOMS shoes at Whole Foods Market’s Style Your Sole event on Saturday, December 3, 2011.

TOMS Shoes 1 TOMS Shoes 2

As part of the TOMS Shoes’ One for One campaign, for every pair of shoes sold, the company will provide a new pair or shoes to a child in need. Local artists will also be on-site from 10 am. – 4 p.m. to leave their mark by decorating each pair of shoes with a custom design for shoppers. Style Your Sole at Whole Foods Market will work to raise awareness for TOMS Shoes’ efforts to support children in developing countries as well as Hawaii’s art scene.

Also, as part of the weekend’s festivities, the Honolulu Academy of Arts’ Art to Go program will be unveiling keiki artwork for shoppers to enjoy as they peruse the aisles or wait for their TOMS Shoes to be transformed into walking pieces of art. Art to Go works to make art accessible to children across the state by bringing instructors and art supplies to underserved communities. In addition to hosting the keiki art show, Whole Foods Market also hosted a Recycle Your Change fundraiser to support the efforts of Art to Go earlier this year.

Artists sharing their time to create one-of-a-kind TOMS Shoes include: Jamie Allen, Solomon Enos, Ryan Higa, Byron Inouye, Christopher Lum, Jon J. Murakami, Cade Roster, Masako Schwalbenitz

PA'I FOUNDATION RECEIVES $150,000 "OUR TOWN" GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

Big congratulations to Kumu Vicki Holt Takamine, who once again moves Hawaii arts and Hawaiian artists forward into the national landscape. The PA'I Foundation is the only Hawai'i organization to receive this prestigious NEA grant designed to develop an "Artspace" project in Hawai'i that will provide both affordable housing for Hawaiian artists and space for traditional Hawaiian art forms.

NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman announced the grant winners earlier today in Washington, D.C. PA'I Foundation is one of 51 inaugural "Our Town" Grant recipients, and the only one from Hawai'i. In total, over $6.5 million is being invested into communities around the country to support the arts as part of a community revitalization strategy.

Vicky Holt Takamine, PA'I Foundation Executive Director and Kumu Hula, "We would like to say 'Mahalo Nui' to the National Endowment for the Arts, our partners at Artspace, the Ford Foundation for their investment into the "discovery" process with Artspace and Mayor Peter Carlisle for providing a letter of support which was critical to our selection. We will use these grant funds to support the development of Ola Ka 'Ilima (Creative Art Spaces)."

"Our Town" is the NEA's latest investment in "Creative Placemaking," through which partners from both public and private sectors come together to shape the social, physical, and economic character of a neighborhood, town, city, or region around arts and cultural activities. The grant invests in "creative and innovative projects in communities specifically seeking to: Improve their quality of life, encourage creative activity, create community identity and a sense of place and revitalize local economies."

Big mahalo to Chad Blair and Civil Beat for making APEC more interesting to cover than the usual. Here Chad interviews one of a select few local businesses who were selected to participate in the week's events, representing just a glimpse of what's going on in Hawaii's hi tech realm.
