Haleiwa Kalo Festival

Follow our host, DANTE CAMARA, from the Kahala Resort's classic Hoku's Restaurant, on a great Sunday afternoon foray into the world of Kalo, or taro, the Native Hawaiian staple similar to a sweet potato, served in a myriad ways... one more interesting than the other. The town we visit is on the north shore of Oahu and it's a haven for surfers and people lucky enough to live the island lifestyle without the hassle of urban Honolulu. One of our loveliest areas and only 40 minutes drive from Waikiki. This annual event is fantastic and if you have never been you must go next year. Natural foods, organic farm products, live music, baby chicks and goats, fried green tomatoes, grass fed beef to chow fun, and a wonderful array of sustainable green environmental businesses. It's all about buying local and supporting our natural environment.  Life is Good in Hawaii.

Parkour at Hi Pet Film Fest

What's Parkour? Ask anyone you see jumping off buildings (safety precautions in place of course), then skateboarding down 5 flights of concrete, parachuting off a cliff into a ravine then bicycling over a 6 foot wall into a duck pond... then use your imagination to envision what more awesome physical feats a seasoned, well trained, athlete involved in this underground world wide sport could possibly do  Because they do it all.

Originally inspired by the regimen of  french military physical training (par cours or something akin to this) taken to the streets around the world, now replace the human with a beautiful DOG doing amazing feats and you've got last year's winning video by Ozzi (parkour officionado and local Hawaii instructor) at the HAWAII PET FILM FESTIVAL 2009.

This year we welcome Ozzi and other great videographers to the 2nd Annual Hi Pet Film Fest held this year at Ward Center. To those who don't have pro gear, don't be shy, if you're not a film student or pro there are categories in which you can prevail!  Take your cell phone and videotape whatever comes to mind. Cute and adorable is good! Children's work is most welcomed. Great prizes in many categories and cash and prizes to the winning over all Best Video.

Nov 6 at Ward (free to public and free parking) is when the videos are screened at end of day after the festivities. Dog fashion shows, vendor booths, costume contest, food, music, and pets alert! Chrisitna Aguilera in Waikiki? Welcome Edition!

If you're too young to have experienced Studio 54, nananananaaah you missed an era that I have to admit, was a bit strange, but really all worth the aging process.  But no worries kids, stop in to the newest very much welcomed addition to Waikiki's night life scene, the Waikiki Edition, a 21st century version of the place to be in Waikiki and while you're there check out Morimoto's (Chef Masaharu Morimoto of the Iron Chef series).  When New York comes to town they certainly do it up big.  Their star studded grand opening was impressive.  Owner Ian Schrager and his team flew in Christina Aguilera and a gaggle of celebrities. Attending also were Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Kevin Dillon, Taryn Manning, Amber Valletta, Ryan Kwanten, Whitney Port, Zach Gilford and a crowd of Honolulu's beautiful folks. We wish them the best of luck and thank them for bringing some of L.A. and NYC to this part of Waikiki (remember the Ilikai?).  We look forward to seeing what comes and encourage them to welcome locals not just visitors.

Mai Tai Still Rumbling!   10/19/2010

Another fabulous week at Mai Tai Rumble. Judges included Dr. John Hart from the Hawaii Pacific University;  Colleen Taaca representing Tihati Productions; Junior Kekuewa.  Bands included  PRESSURE DROP (winner) and ONE RIDDIM.  The event's "After Shock Band" was
