Hawaii Tailgating - UH vs Wisconsin Pt 1
We saved the best for last... and while the University of Hawaii celebrates 100 years of football we celebrate Hawaii tailgating with a bang. Watch the videos. You cannot believe how elaborate and just plain ono. Fresh grilled crab ten different ways. Alaskan King, dungeness, kona, snow crab... and raw clams, giant raw oysters, and barbecued abalone. At this last game lots of parties prepared home-made laulau -- some with seafood and even a duck lau lau, squid luau, poke 101 ways and then the exotics: chichirones, pajeon, kilawin. During this last tailgating party on the tarmack every single group invited PacificNetwork.tv to join them. Our crew ate so much it was not to be believed. Only in Hawaii! They made plates, they packed us bentos, they did tastings and toaasts. Where else can you find this kind of aloha? Our PacificNetwork.tv crew voted on today's best: Max: furikaki fried spam musubi; Tommy: spicy odaeng (korean fish cake) Susanne: toss up between the bbq'd abalone, spicy pickled onions, and the chocolate chip Noh Foods haupia cake; Michelle: bourbon scallops with Noh BBQ sauce.
Stay tuned for the final cook off where we'll post all the finalists' recipes and announce winners and their prizes. For now, another great recipe: Chocolate Chip Noh Foods Haupia Cake.
1 Box mix cake, Noh Foods Haupia Pudding mix, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, Heath™ candy bar, good quality dark chocolate candy bar.Prepare the Noh haupia mix but make a pudding instead of a stiff jello. Bake cake as instructed on box and add chocolate chips and crushed Heath bars into batter. Make two layers. Between the layers spread the haupia pudding. Top with the haupia pudding, toasted shaved coconut, and shaved chocolate candy bar.
We'll be posting more recipes so stay tuned. It's been big fun and beyond the food, tailgating brings about life long friendships. During the season we met folks who had been tailgating for 15+ years. Some friendships formed right on the tarmack at Aloha Stadium. The crewalso caught up with UH football alumni greats and went behind the scenes into the stadium before the game to capture interviews with Coach Bob Wagner who took took the team to a WAC championship, Blazo Sarzevich, Merv Lopes Jr. - wide receiver, Michael Carter - quarterback who posted the UH's first bowl game victory. Thanks to everyone who got into the mood and really came up with some incredible culinary creations. For more, keep in the loop at The Honolulu Advertiser and PacificNetwork.tv
