Kung Hei Fat Choy at the Kahala

January 26th, 2012
By PacificNetwork.tv

Firecrackers popped, cymbals crashed, drums beat into the evening ... at Kahala's welcoming in the new Year of the Dragon!  Celebration traditionally occurs for the first few weeks of a new lunar year with parades and celebrations of traditions now many thousands of years old.  Scholars estimate the Chinese calendar began during the reign of Huangdi translating the year 2012 to "chinese year" 4,710.  Or some say 4,709 or could be 4,649, but who's counting? It's a lot of years.  In any event this is one heck of a celebration for the family... little red envelopes full of money, traditional sweet cakes and sugared fruits, all part of the celebration of the lunar new year.

My favorite is the dragon and the lion dances. In ancient China villagers feared the springtime attacks of the dreaded "Nian" a dragon-like beast from under the sea ( it also lives high in the mountains so beware).  The Nian looked for adults, children and dogs.  It was sensitive to loud noises and it didn't like the color red.  So drums, plates, and bowls were turned into noise makers. Firecrackers were tossed, babies dressed in bright red, red banners and flags were flown throughout the village and all of this to scare away the big bad Nian.

This week join in Hawaii's celebration of the Year of the Dragon.  Wear your red, put money in the lion's mouth for good luck and prosperity, and make a party!

Peek into My Cat's Diary ...

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. All though I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow — but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released – and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe, for now……….

I Love Science

I Love Science

... because it's magical to see how the physical world works when you understand that certain principles exist in our Universe and we have no clue why other than they hold us to this spinning orb in the midst of our galaxy, which is moving constantly among billions of other galaxies in infinite space.  I stumbled upon a series of these vignettes courtesy of the National Science Foundation and believe that anyone 9 to 90 years will be as fascinated as I was in watching "how our world works".  This video uses an olive in a martini glass.  You'll see how the olive is transferred without touching the olive.  We were having problems earlier with loading videos, hope this works.  Enjoy!  Screen shot 2012-01-23 at 7.22.06 AM
